Nikaia, also known as Kokkinia, which is its former name, is an area of Piraeus and is a municipal unit and seat of the Municipality of Nikaia - Ag. Ioannis Rentis. It is located about 4 km northwest of Piraeus and 8 km west of the centre of Athens and borders with the municipalities of Korydallos, Haidari, Egaleo, Agia Varvara, Moschato-Tavros, Piraeus and the Municipality of Keratsini.

Nikaia is one of those refugee cities that were created after the Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922 and became the new home of the uprooted refugees of Asia Minor. Its peculiarity consists in the fact that people who come from different regions of the East live together, have a special mentality, various occupations and as a connecting link have the Greek origin, the Greek language and the Orthodox Faith.

It has been officially recognized as a city of martyrdom, on the occasion of the barbarity suffered during the Occupation by the occupying troops, in the events that became known as the Battle of Kokkinia and the Block of Kokkinia respectively. Today, in Nikaia there are monuments that can be visited that highlight the refugee struggle, the resistance and the events that took place during the Occupation.

After the war, Nikaia began to urbanize and grow more and more. In the northern areas of the city, from the 50's and 60's, they settled in privately owned lands, quarries, those of Selepitsari and Karabini. These lands, much later and while the quarries were no longer inactive, the municipality bought them and built sports and cultural facilities.

Today's visitor to Nikaia can visit various places that highlight its recent history such as the refugee squares and the renovated Bath - (Hammam), giving an idea of how the first refugees who inhabited it after 1922 lived.

Nikaia is a modern city, with excellent roads which, preserving some of its traditional elements and keeping the historical memories of the past alive, vigorously claims its present, thus creating the legacy of the future.
