A few words about Glyfada, Athens

Glyfada is the largest of the traditional southern suburbs and extends from the Saronic Sea to the roots of Mount Ymittos. It is called the "capital" of the southern suburbs of Attica and is identified with the glamour of the Athenian Riviera as it brings together all the commercial, economic, gastronomic and recreational activity of the region.

Around 1900 the whole coastal area was pine-covered and completely uninhabited. As early as 1920, a small suburb of Athens with 173 permanent residents was formed. From the first well that was opened then for the needs of water supply, the water of the area was found to be glyph. From this event the area of Glyfada was named. With the increase of the inhabitants of Athens and the holidaymakers of Faliro, the area began to develop with holiday homes and camps. From Glyfada started, among others, the mass consumption of Coca Cola in Greece, the spread of fast food, nightclubs, etc.

In Glyfada there are two marinas, a spiritual and cultural centre, sports centres, ten sports clubs among many others, as well as various cultural institutions. Important monuments have been erected in Glyfada, such as the marble statue of Agios Chrysostomos of Smyrna in the square of Agia Triada, as well as the monument of G. Seferis and Elytis Street on Lambraki Street.
