A few words about Kaisariani
Kaisariani is an urban area and municipality of the Central Sector of Athens. It borders with the Municipalities of Zografou, Athens and the Municipality of Byrona. To the east is Mount Imittus.
Kaisariani was inhabited by refugees who came to Greece after the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1922. Most of them came from Smyrna and the surrounding villages. The arrival of the refugees in Athens caused a huge issue of their settlement in various areas of Attica as well as in Kallithea, where the Shooting Range existed at the time. In order, to settle the refugees, the area of the Shooting Range of Kallithea was expropriated by the state, and then the actions of finding a new place proceeded.
The new place chosen was Kaisariani. Specifically, in 1930 Eleftherios Venizelos transferred an area of 710 acres of Kaisariani to the Panhellenic Shooting Company as a firing range, provided that the area would be used by the armed forces. Later, it was granted to the Hunting Weapons Fans Club.
Worth to visit in Kaisariani:
Shooting range of Kaisariani
The area of the Shooting Range, before '22, was a wooded and rocky area used for the shooting of soldiers and especially the artillery.
During the German Occupation, the Shooting Range of Kaisariani was a place of execution of Greeks. On May 1, 1944, 200 Greek communists (200 from Kaisariani) were executed by the occupation troops in retaliation for the death of a German general who lost his life in a battle with the guerrillas in Molaous, Laconia.
In 1984, the configuration of the space into a modern amusement park began, while next to the execution site there is a monument in honour of those who were sacrificed there and the Museum of the EAM National Resistance of Kaisariani was created.
Aesthetic Forest
Near the ancient spring of Kalopoula, in the Aesthetic Forest of Ymittos, is the refectory house of the Municipality of Kaisariani with outdoor space and winter room, in a beautiful natural environment, among the trees. Apart from the greenery and beautiful walking paths, in the area there is also a playground with swings and other constructions for play and fun.
The forest is the work of the Philodasiki Association of Athens. It was planted with respect for nature and love for man. It was designated "Aesthetic Forest" and was declared by the EU "Historic Garden of Europe". It is maintained and protected at the expense and care of the Philodasiki Association.
Monastery of Kaisariani
The Monastery of Kaisariani is located at an altitude of about 350m, in the aesthetic forest of Ymittos. The Monastery is dedicated to the Entrances of the Virgin Mary and was built at the end of the 11th century or in the early 12th while it ceased to operate in 1833.
Kaisariani is an area famous for its taverns, traditional restaurants and bars. You find most of them in the square of Kaisariani and in the surrounding alleys.
