A few words about Athens

Athens has been the capital of Greece since 1834 and the country's largest and most populous city. It was named after the goddess Athena. It is located in Attica, and is one of the oldest cities in the world, with its recorded history reaching as far as 3,200 BC.

The central square of Athens is Syntagma Square, which took its name from the uprising of the army and the people and the gathering that took place there on September 3, 1843. Syntagma Square is located opposite the Old Palace, the current seat of the Hellenic Parliament, and very close to most of the attractions of central Athens.
It is within walking distance of Plaka, Monastiraki, Kolonaki and Psirri and the archaeological sites of the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and Hadrian's Library. It is in front of the Parliament from the Amalia Avenue side and in front of the Unknown Soldier Monument, with a fountain and garden, trees, statues and a cafe. There is also a central metro station in the square.

Omonia Square is, together with Syntagma, one of the oldest squares in Athens. In the square there are also several places to eat while there is an electric and Metro station. It is the center of celebration of sporting successes, as was done after winning the Euro 2004 and EuroBasket 2005 championships. In 1988, the sculpture "Runner" by the sculptor Kostas Varotsos, made of glass, was erected in Omonia, which in 1994 was moved to the Square of the Great School of the Genus, opposite the Hilton Hotel.

The center of Athens is one of the most famous and lively destinations in Greece. It is a lively and bustling place, full of history, culture and business activity. Also, the center of Athens attracts millions of visitors every year who seek to discover the rich history and culture of Athens.

In addition, in the center of Athens you will find many shopping malls, shops, restaurants, cafes, museums and art galleries.

The most popular areas in the center of Athens are:

Plaka: It is the old town of Athens, known for its narrow streets, traditional restaurants and small cafes. Here you can visit the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum and the Archaeological Museum of Plaka.
Ermou: It is one of the central commercial streets of Athens. Here you will find many clothes, shoes, jewelry and chain stores, as well as restaurants and cafes.
Monastiraki: It is an area with a strong urban character and many bars, cafes and restaurants. Here is also the metro station of the same name, from where you can go to other parts of the city.

Finally, in the center of Athens you will also find various museums, such as the Acropolis Museum, the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum, where you can explore the history and culture of Greece.

Overall, downtown Athens is a very interesting area to walk around, explore the architecture and culture, enjoy the food and nightlife, and enjoy the Athens experience.
