A few words about Pagrati

Pagrati is a district of the eastern part of the Municipality of Athens that borders Kolonaki, Ilisia, Kaisariani, Byronas, Ymittos and Neos Kosmos.

The district was probably named by the god Hercules, because of the sanctuary that was found and excavated by Giannis Miliadis, or by the god Pagratis, whose worship may, according to one interpretation, coexist with the worship of Hercules. According to another version, the name was given to a monk Pagrati, who had lived in a temple in the area during the Turkish occupation.

The Palace Cinema in Pagrati is the oldest cinema in Athens, which has been operating continuously since 1925. In the 1950s and 1960s it experienced its greatest prosperity and sold about 5,000 tickets a day, especially in the summers when both rooms were open.

Kallimarmaro, also known as the Panathinaiko Stadium is located in Pagrati. It is one of the most popular attractions in Athens as the first Olympic Games were held there and today it is used as a sports and concert venue.
