Kolonaki, is one of the most cosmopolitan districts of Athens, located in the shadow of the hill of Lycabettus and a few minutes away from Syntagma. After the creation of the Modern Greek state, due to its location in the heart of Athens, the district evolved and to this day continues to be considered one of the most wealthy and upmarket districts of the Municipality of Athens.

Athenian tradition says that when the city suffered from a plague during the Ottoman occupation, citizens held a procession to quell the "evil" by raising one of the many ancient columns (kolonaki) scattered throughout the area. This is how the whole district got its name.

The trademark for Kolonaki is its square, in which several of the most important commercial streets of the city converge and hosts popular cafes, lively alternatives and modern bars and luxury restaurants. In the square and in the surrounding streets you can find beautiful neoclassical buildings in Athens, museums and galleries, as well as offices of politicians, lawyers and doctors. Many well-known Athenians frequented and still frequent the cafes of the square.

It is worth visiting Kolonaki as it is one of the capital's leading shopping areas. It includes a number of high-end boutiques from young adult to casual fashion to prestigious haute couture from Greek and international designers. One of its main shopping streets, Voukourestiou Street, is now known for its jewelry. It is one of the most elegant and stately neighborhoods in central Athens, with neoclassical buildings and numerous trendy galleries and Museums.
