Irakleion is a suburb in the north-eastern part of the Athens and is located about 8 km of Athens city centre. It was named after a sanctuary of Heracles that was located in the area in classical antiquity. The municipality of Heraklion borders with the municipalities of Maroussi, Nea Ionia, Metamorfosi and Lykovrysi - Pefki.
In the time of Otto, the Military Colony of the Bavarians (1837) was built in Old Heraklion, which were the mercenaries that Otto had brought with him when he came as king of Greece. The area was not chosen at random. It is said that Otton's courtiers, after his order, slaughtered lambs and left them in various parts of Attica. Where the lambs would rot later, they thought it had less humidity and a better climate. Indeed, the lambs rotted later in Heraklion and so they chose the area. Over the years, the Bavarians were assimilated by the locals and Hellenized, maintaining only the Catholic doctrine and the name. They are often the Bavarian surnames even today (Wagger, Pitligger, Kelmager, Fix and others).
After the Asia Minor Catastrophe, in 1922, Greek refugees from Asia Minor settled in the area, rapidly increasing the population of Heraklion. Since the 1960s, there has been an influx and settlement of new inhabitants due to astyphilia, from many areas of Greece.
In the 2000s, Attiki Odos and the Suburban Railway operated with a station in Heraklion. In addition, the bus lines to the neighbouring municipalities are particularly enriched, as well as the public transport starting from the electric station.
There are centres where the concentration of citizens is high where they come in contact with music, theatre, poetry and dance. The most important of these is the main square with its many cafes and open-air theatre, where cultural events, festivals and exhibitions of traditional products are often held. The Municipality also includes the Spiritual Centres of the Holy Temple of Agia Triada and Agios Loukas, and the summer cinema "Nostalgia". In the middle of the Municipality are housed many regional television stations.
