A few words about Filothei
Filothei is a settlement of the Municipality of Filothei Psychiko in the Northern Sector of Athens. The community was founded in 1934 and is considered one of the most privileged suburbs of the city as it is located near the centre of Athens, about 7km, while at the same time it is green, and retains the character of a garden city.
Filothei has been historically home to important people such as politicians, businessmen and many of Athens' foreign residents, especially those employed in diplomatic capacities.
It was named Filothei in honour of Agia Filothei, the crypt of which was discovered in 1934 during the process of extracting red stone intended for the construction of houses in the area.
The History of Filothei in its current form begins in 1920 when the management of the National Bank of Greece chose this area to meet the housing needs of its employees. The design and reconstruction of the settlement was based on English standards for the creation of a garden city.
After many efforts for the approval of the most suitable road plan (1931-1934), the construction of houses began, after the appropriate infrastructure works (electricity, water supply, road network, etc.) were done first.
In the area, the operation of two small markets with a few shops was foreseen, which had as sole purpose the service of the basic needs of the inhabitants. Any other type of professional housing was banned, with a relevant pioneering clause in the decree approving the road plan, in order to ensure the protection of the environment and the development of a calm and quiet area.
The stream of Filothei, the rich greenery and the many facilities of public utility such as groves, tennis and track courts, sports and promenade routes, but also the fact that it is a purely residential area shape the character and justify its characterization as a garden city.
