    A few words about Acharnes Menidi Athens

    Acharnes is about 11 kilometers from the center of Athens. The Municipality of Acharnes is administratively part of the Eastern Attica Prefecture of the Attica Region. It borders with the Municipalities of Avlona, ​​Nea Erythraia, Kifisia, Ekali, Agios Stefanos, Metamorfosi, Nea Filadelfia, Agioi Anargyroi, Kamatero, Zephyri, Ano Liosia, Fylis and Thracomakedones and with the Communities of Malakasa, Afidne and Kryonerio.

    Their habitation from ancient times to the present day is timeless and important as can be concluded from the excavation data and the philological sources that testify to the importance of the area.

    The important monuments include the Mycenaean Vaulted Tomb in Kokkino Mylo, the Ancient Theater in the center of the current municipality, the Tomb of Sophocles in Varybompi, the Roman Farmhouse in Aulida, parts of Hadrian's Aqueduct in the Olympic Village, Agio Sotira, Agioi Theodori, Saint John the Forerunner (Fasting) etc.
    In addition to the excavation evidence, the evidence of written sources, which often refer to Acharnes and their citizens who played a decisive role in the political, social, religious and economic life of the Athenian state: Pausanias, Thucydides, Lucian, Seneca, Pindar, Aristophanes, Plutarch, Lucian, Diodorus Siculus, Xenophon, Demosthenes, Isocrates, Herodian, etc.

    Due to their location, Acharnes was of great importance for the city-state of Athens and was one of its main bastions. The military importance of the area is also proven by the abundance of fortifications, fortresses, towers and walls on the hills around Acharnes that shielded the borders of Attica.
    The importance of the Acharnes, however, was not limited only to their strategic position, but also to their economic prosperity from the exploitation of agriculture with irrigation systems, viticulture, beekeeping and the charcoal trade, which was also their main source of wealth. Activities that gave them a lot of income with which they contributed to the economic development of the city-state of Athens to which they belonged.

    The Municipality of Acharnon, which was designated an Olympic municipality, among others in 2004, is today one of the largest municipalities of Attica with an area of ​​over 150,000 acres.

    The administrative boundaries of the Municipality include: Kokkinos Mylos, Varybobi, Tatoi Airport (Dekelia), a small part of the former Royal Estate (it used to belong to the whole), the Olympic Village and a large part of the Parnitha National Forest, with the Casino and two Mountain refuges.
