A few words about Nea Philadelphia, Nea Ionia, Athens

The area of New Philadelphia is located in the north-western suburbs of Athens. It borders north with the Municipality of Metamorfosi, northwest with the Municipality of Acharnes, east with the Municipality of Nea Ionia, south with the Municipality of Nea Chalkidona and west with the Municipality of Agioi Anargyroi.

Until September 1927, the area was called Podoniftis, from the homonymous stream that flows through it. In 1924, refugees from Asia Minor from the refugees of Ampelokipi settled there (after a large fire that destroyed the shacks where they lived), in new apartments that were built there and were given to them. It was named New Philadelphia in memory of the city of "Philadelphia" in Asia Minor.

It is considered a nice suburb, as it has enough greenery, to which the parks of the area and the Grove contribute. After the 1999 earthquake, the refugee settlement was protected as a traditional settlement.

Since the beginning of the last century, urban development has significantly reduced the green lungs of the capital. The New Philadelphia Grove remains an important green lung of the area and one of the largest in Athens. The New Philadelphia Grove, which today we all enjoy its beauty, has gone through various stages until it takes its current form. It has a wide variety of trees and plants and covers an area of 480 acres.

The Museum of Hellenism in Asia Minor "Filio Haidemenou" houses historical relics from Asia Minor, such as costumes, books, documents, useful objects, which were donated by Asia Minor.

AEK was founded in the centre of Athens in 1924 and moved to New Philadelphia during the first settlement of the New Philadelphia refugee settlement in the summer of 1927. It is one of the most historic teams in Greece.
