The castle

The Castle is the most important historical site of Skiathos and one of the most beautiful, most religious and energetic areas of the island. It was the medieval capital of Skiathos and was founded around the middle of the 19th century when the Skiathos were forced to leave the ancient city of Skiathos due to constant pirate raids and move to the northern part of the island and build their Castle City. It is the most important attraction of Skiathos, as it combines the wild beauty of the landscape with the most important historical moments of the island.

The Bourtzi

In Skiathos there are two ports, the commercial and the old, which are separated by the Peninsula (Island) of Bourtzi. In 1207 the Gyzi brothers built the small Venetian fortress, to protect the city but also for their own residence. After the liberation, the first disinfection of the island operated in Bourtzi. In 1906, with the donation of Andreas Syggros, the Primary school of the island was built in the center of the peninsula. At the entrance is the bust of Alexandros Papadiamantis.
Today Bourtzi is a place of recreation, offering a magnificent view and is overgrown with pine trees. Only a few remnants of the walls have survived from the old fortress, while the primary school has been turned into a cultural center, which includes, among other things, a summer theater, where performances are given every summer. Finally, there is a municipal café on site, where you can enjoy your coffee or drink.

The house of Papadiamantis

One of the greatest and most important figures of Greek literature, Alexandros Papadiamantis, was born and lived in Skiathos. His works, for the most part, revolve around the beauties of the island and the daily life of the inhabitants, written with his pure and poetic speech. Papadiamantis house is definitely worth a visit, as it is a typical example of the island's architecture. This is the house of the Greek writer, where he grew up and died.

Beaches and Natural Landscapes of Skiathos

The most famous beach of Skiathos and one of its symbols, is Koukounaries, an organized beach with fine sand, while a very special beach is Lalaria, which however is accessible only by boat.

Do not forget to visit the natural attractions of Skiathos, such as the sea caves in Lalaria and the pine forest in Koukounaries. In the forest is the lake Strofilias, which is chosen by many species of migratory birds to stop during their journey!
