Rhodes is the fourth largest island in Greece located in the south-eastern Aegean Sea and belongs to the Dodecanese.

The name of the island comes from the rodon, a flower similar to the rose, which the ancient inhabitants adopted as an emblem of the sun god.

The island thanks to its size, natural environment and its location in the eastern Mediterranean has an ancient history, influenced by the Ancient Greek Civilization, the Hellenistic and Roman eras, Christianity and Byzantium, the era of the Knights of Rhodes, the Ottoman Empire, and the Italian occupation in the 20th century.

The sights of Rhodes because of all the above, include ancient citadels, medieval castles, Christian monuments, also many public and private buildings with influence from the Italian architecture of the interwar period.

Main sights of Rhodes:

A trademark and capital of Rhodes is the ancient Medieval City. It is built semi circularly around the main port and was founded in 408 BC, and the best way to turn it around is on foot. It is surrounded by well-preserved medieval defensive walls of the 14th and 15th centuries, with ramparts and turrets, a moat, and bridges at the Gates.
Other important sights of the Old Town are the Temple of Aphrodite, the Hospital of the Knights, which houses the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the Armoury, the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Suleiman Mosque and the Palace Of Castellany.

The Old Town, however, is not just for romantic walks. It is a living State, which is flooded - always with respect to tradition, by all kinds of shops, restaurants, taverns and a very intense nightlife.
Outside the city walls stretches the New Town, with impressive buildings from the period of the Italian occupation, such as the Post Office, the Prefecture, the City Hall, the National Theatre and the Church of the Annunciation.

Lindos

It is worth seeing the Acropolis of Lindos, with an impressive view, the Temple of Athena Lindia at the southern end of the Acropolis, the Propylaea and the necropolis on the hill in front of the Acropolis. 
Lindos is one of the most popular destinations on the island. It combines relaxation with intense life, a trip to the past with natural beauties, traditional mansions with history and wonderful beaches.

The Valley of the Butterflies

It is the most popular natural attraction of Rhodes. The valley is located in a beautiful environment with rich vegetation, waterfalls and springs, while the area is landscaped with wooden bridges, benches and lakes. Every year, from June to September, the butterflies gather here to mate, creating a colourful and spectacular event.

Rodini Park

Just three kilometres from the city of Rhodes, there is an earthly paradise, Rodini Park. It is probably the oldest park in the world, a small valley full of rhododendrons, shady plane trees, running water and cool green ponds with bridges, as well as a small zoo, where the visitor can admire the famous deer of Rhodes. Besides, the peacocks, which move freely in the area of the Park, give an exotic note to the space. There is also a refreshment room inside the Park, while the renovation works that are in progress aim to give it its original form as an amusement and recreation park.
