Larisa is the capital of the prefecture of Larissa, as well as the Region of Thessaly, while it is one of the largest Greek cities.
Larisa is an ancient city and has been inhabited for almost 4,000 years.

Today the following monuments are preserved: First Ancient Theatre, Three-aisled Early Christian basilica, Early Christian bath, Middle Byzantine church, Bezesteni. Also finds from the ancient acropolis of Larissa have been found in excavations on the hill. On the north side of the hill at a point overlooking the river and the north side of the city, is the church of Agios Achilleios, patron saint of Larissa.
The river Pinios is inextricably linked to the city of Larisa for centuries and crosses the city centre. It is located on the north side of the Fortress hill, and together with the Alcazar Park which is by the river they create an oasis of greenery and tranquillity in the city centre.
The transport infrastructure that exists in the prefecture (railway network, highway) makes the city very accessible. The city's economy also contributes to the development of business and conference tourism.
