Komotini is the capital of the prefecture of Rodopi. In the post-war years the city developed thanks to its central geographical position and its importance as an administrative center, maintaining its character, despite the integration of minority groups.
The University, founded in 1974, plays a special role in shaping the economic and intellectual life of the region.
Komotini today, is a multicultural city consisting of local Greeks, Greek descendants of refugees from Central Asia and Eastern Thrace, Muslims (Roma and Pomaks) and Armenians. It is a magical crossroads, where the past and the present coexist uniquely.
It presents a special diversity thanks to its history and culture, elements that are also responsible for important monuments and attractions. Some of which are the following:
WATCH TOWER
The centre of the city is dominated by the Clock Tower, built in 1884, during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid. In the 1950s architectural interventions were made and it took its current form. Behind the tower rises the minaret of the Yeni Mosque, from the balcony of which the muezzin invites the followers of Islam to prayer. The interior of the Yeni Mosque is open to visitors, as long as they follow certain formal rules, such as taking off their shoes, etc.
THE MARKET OF KOMOTINI
The market of Komotini is one of the best in Thrace in avant-garde, prices and variety, a fact that is certified by the visits of residents of neighbouring prefectures for shopping in Komotini. Many streets of the city are very commercial, such as Venizelou, the most beautiful pedestrian street in the city, Ermou, with its tin workshops, the well-known tin cans, which give a unique colour to the city market, and others.

It is covered mainly by pine trees and is an ideal place for walking, sports or rest. There are landscaped areas with kiosks, tables, benches, paved paths, and sports fields.
In the forest you can find the tourist kiosk. It is a magnificent natural balcony, from where every guest enjoys a rare view and beauty. For the residents of Komotini and for all the visitors of the city, the Tourist Kiosk of Nymfaia is a permanent oasis of recreation, all seasons of the year.
THE MANSIONS OF THE CITY
The old mansions of Komotini are an indisputable witness of the economic and intellectual development of the Greeks of the city during the last period of Ottoman rule. Depending on their architectural form, they are divided into two groups. The first includes the older mansions with folk architecture and the second the newer ones, which follow European architectural styles (baroque, neoclassical).
