Serres is the capital of the homonymous prefecture of Central Macedonia and is its administrative and financial center. It is a modern city, with large streets, squares and parks, which has all the comforts of a modern provincial city and the natural beauties of Northern Greece. The construction of the citadel dates back to the 9th century AD, most likely, during the reign of Emperor Nikiforos Phokas.

It is worth visiting the church of Agios Theodoros, also known as the Old Metropolis which is considered the most important Byzantine monument of the city. The church functioned as a metropolitan church from the Byzantine to the recent years.

In the city are preserved in a state of decay four important Ottoman monuments which date from the 15th century. These monuments are considered to be among the oldest in Europe and are important in the history of Islamic architecture.

The whole prefecture is surrounded by picturesque villages and wonderful natural landscapes such as valleys, all-white mountains, thermal springs, lakes and caves which are an attraction for visitors all year round. From the city of Serres we can visit many interesting sights of the prefecture: The forest of Lailias, the lake Kerkini, the archeological site and the museum of Amphipolis, the beautiful cave of Alistrati and the paradise gorge of the river Aggitis.

The Folklore Museum of Sarakatsani is located in the center of the city and is housed in a three-level building. It presents with exemplary objects and elements the way of life of the Sarakatsani and their art and tradition from the interwar period until the end of the ‘40s.

Leaving the city of Serres, do not forget to try the traditional dessert of the area, the acanes. The aganes, at first glance, resembles the Turkish delight. Classically presented wrapped in powdered sugar, with almonds and a delicate aroma of butter, which gives it its unique identity.
