Trikala, the capital of the homonymous prefecture, is a beautiful modern city, with very good roads and large squares that are full of life. It is built on the site of ancient Trikki known since the years of Homer and an important centre of antiquity, as Asklipios lived and worked here.

Upon entering the city of Trikala we can see the Castle of the city built at its highest point. It was probably built in the classical era and has undergone many changes since then. It was renovated by Emperor Justinian and repaired by the Ottomans, who in the 17th century built a large clock on its east side.

The greatest historical interest is concentrated in the old town which consists of the districts of Varousi and old Manavika. Varousi is located on the outskirts of the Fortress and until the 1930s was the noble neighbourhood of Trikala. Today it is fully preserved. It is distinguished for the beautiful mansions with the elaborate architectural rhythms, which reflect the economic and cultural flourishing of the 18th and 19th century. Here you will find most and the oldest churches of Trikala. Following the district Varousi up to the central square is the part of the city called old Manavika with characteristic architecture. There are some of the best taverns and cafe-bars in that area.
The Hill of Profitis Elias, is a remarkable green lung overlooking the city and within walking distance of the city centre. On this hill is the church of Profitis Ilias, the Centre for Environmental Education in Dapia and the Zoo of the city which among other things hosts ostriches, horses, deer and several species of birds.
