If you forget to water your plants on a regular basis, cacti and succulents are made for you. In a semi-shady spot, a bi-monthly watering will do the job with succulents, and cacti need much less frequently than that. Cacti and succulents are quite unique in their ability to tolerate bright and direct sunlight, which most species won't like. SNAKE PLANT (SANSEVIERIA or MOTHER IN-LAW-TONGUE)

Snake plant look like a pile of swords, and they're tough as nails. They seem to thrive on neglect, handling dark shade and harsh, direct sunlight like champs, even when they've outgrown their pot. These are great plants for offices, because they do fine with infrequent watering and icky fluorescent light. There's really only one way to kill a snake plant, and that's by over-watering. They'll rot out from the core. Watering once a month is about right, or every few weeks if they're sitting in hot, direct sunlight. Otherwise, they do best with bright filtered light (but can handle brighter or dimmer light just fine). If they get too crowded in their pot, upgrade it to a bigger pot in the spring.

ALOE VERA

Aloe Vera is a beautiful, rich luscious succulent. With just a bit of water once a month and they'll put up with almost anything, (great to have handy around the kitchen if you're prone to minor burns). Aloe Vera plant is one of the hardiest succulents around. While it does need a lot of bright, indirect sunlight, it only needs to be watered once every three weeks, once the soil has thoroughly dried out. Just make sure it's planted to allow for proper drainage (with a layer of pebbles topped by potting soil in a pot with multiple drainage holes), as this is the most common reason this desert succulent dies.

BROMELIADS

Appreciated for their diversity and rare beauty, bromeliads make great indoor plants. Native to the American tropics, bromeliads are stem-less perennial plants, growing distinctive clusters or rosettes of long, pointed leaves, sometimes handsomely marked. Flowers vary, but most are dramatically showy and colourful. Their luscious, deep greens are suddenly disrupted by a burst of glorious colour! They're fantastic eye-catchers, but they also thrive in a variety of lighting conditions and need just monthly watering. 

POTHOS PLANT

A tropical specimen that's hard to kill, and purifies the air. Pothos is nearly indestructible and highly rewarding thanks to a rapid growth. Water weekly and keep it in shady to semi-bright spot. It will love the moistness of your bathroom but will also thrive in your main reception room. Pothos has the power to create a lush effect in any dark and dusty corner of the house, bringing large and generous leaves that fall down or climb up in vines. 

ZZ PLANT

There's a reason these are a mainstay of shopping malls, hospitals, and office buildings: they're indestructible. This tropical perennial plant is well loved for its upright, glossy foliage that is vaguely reminiscent of cycad fronds. It is also known as the Zanzibar gem, this elegant and low maintenance plant will bring style and structure to your house. It's perfect for the living room on a side or console table. It does not demand anything else than a bi-monthly watering during growth period. When not growing, it can thrive with less water than that in a shady spot, thanks to its high tolerance to shade. Avoid placing it under direct sunlight. Caution: wash hands after touching the plant, as it's poisonous!

LUCKY BAMBOO

These little bamboos have cropped up a lot in recent years. They're fantastically fun and playful. Their shapes bring such character, and as an added benefit, they can last! They need no soil, happily sitting with their roots submerged in baths, making it very easy to make sure they have what they need.

CITRUS PLANT

Fresh citrus is one of the greatest smells. Dwarf Lemon Trees are low maintenance and their citrus (lemons) scented blossoms come around with easy regularity followed by their bright yellow fruit. Needing only moderate light and monthly watering, they're an easy addition with their lush greens, fresh scents and a pop of colour.

PEACE LILY (SPATHIPHYLLUM)

Peace Lily is a plant that is not only distinguished by its unusual name, but also by its quite beautiful white flowers. The leaves of the plant have an acute form, and the flowers are similar to mini callas, ready to please the hosts 360 days a year. Spathiphyllum requires little light and water, yet bring oxygen and calm into a space, and though they need little light themselves, the white flowers seem to create light in their own spaces. After the plant has not been watered for more than two weeks, its white flowers may fall a little and start to wither, but immediately after the water intake they will instantly come to life. Growing such a plant, you will not have the need for its constant fertilizer.

PHILODENDRON

The heartleaf philodendron plant is a traditional choice because it's super easy to read, so you'll always know what your plant needs. This plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight, and if you notice its leaves getting yellow, that's a sign it's getting too much light. It needs to be watered about once a week - when the top inch of soil is dry - and if its leaves start to droop it's a sign you're watering it too much or not enough. It is easily adaptable and can be moved indoors and out without much stress. It is vibrant and rich, and require surprisingly little attention, thriving in almost any room.

RUBBER PLANT (FICUS ELASTICA)

Ficus elastica is one of the safest of all indoor plants with thick, glossy, and leathery dark green leaves. The easiest plant for beginners to maintain, this handsome plant grows well in bright, indirect light and doesn't require very much maintenance. During the summer it needs to be kept moist by misting or wiping the leaves down with a damp cloth. But otherwise, it only needs to be watered once or twice a month. Rubber plants grow quickly, so be sure to plant yours in an oversize pot to avoid having to replant it. If you prefer to keep it small, you can restrict its growth by opting for a smaller pot. And don't forget to fertilize every two weeks during late spring to early fall.
