A few words about Nea Smyrni Attikis

Nea Smyrni is located about 4 km southwest of central Athens and borders on the north with Neos Kosmos, on the east with Agios Dimitrios, on the south with Paleo Faliro and on the west with Kallithea.

Nea Smyrni began to be inhabited at the beginning of the twentieth century, after the arrival of Greek refugees from Smyrna and other areas of Asia Minor on the then outskirts of Athens. After the Asia Minor Catastrophe, in 1922-1923, the government decided to build a settlement for the refugees from Smyrna in the area and its construction began in 1926. Nea Smyrni became a Municipality with the end of World War II and the liberation, the 1944 and owes its name to the origin of its refugee inhabitants. After the war, Nea Smyrni was integrated into Athens, which was enlarged by internal migration and expanded to the east and south with a growing population.

On August 9, 1944, at the end of the Occupation, because the municipality was a stronghold of mass resistance, it became one of the epicentres of the second largest and most deadly bloc in Athens (after that of Kokkinia), the one in Dourgouti-Faro-Katsipodi. During the December 1944 riots, the area became a battleground between British troops and ELAS fighters.

Alsos of Nea Smyrni (Grove) is a green "lung" in the heart of the city created in the 1920s. This is one of the largest parks in the municipalities of Attica with an area of 50,000 sqm which is a reference point of the city, ideal for those who have integrated sports activities in their daily lives.

Among the most important monuments of the city, stands out the Metropolitan Church of Agia Fotini with the imposing bell tower, which is an exact copy of what was in Agia Fotini of Smyrna until the Catastrophe of 1922, while other important historical buildings in the area that retain the marks of the historicity of the city intact through time such as the Palace of the Nea Smyrni Centre, the Iosifoglio Orphanage School and the National Shelter.
