A few words about Ilion, Athens

Ilion is an urban area and municipality of the Western Sector of Athens in the Attica Region and one of the largest suburbs of Athens. It develops around the newest settlement of Nea Liossia, bordering on the south with the Municipality of Peristeri, on the east with the Municipality of Agios Anargyros-Kamatero and on the west with Petroupoli.

The modern history of the city of Ilion begins with the founding of the settlement of Ilion Troas, in 1858, where originally lived the families of the workers of the Eptalofos estate (also known as the Queen's Tower), Bavarian officers, courtiers and wealthy Athenians favoured by the Royal Court.

The Municipality of Ilion, having completed basic receptions in the fields of cleaning, green, environment, as well as in the fields of Culture and Sports and Social Welfare, is today a modern Municipality of Western Athens.

Queen's Tower

The estate of Pyrgos Vassilissis was born from the vision of Queen Amalia to create a model installation. The vineyards were one of the first crops of the estate. Experienced vine growers from Megara were hired to shape the vineyard. The tour of the Tower is a unique experience. It lasts 2.5 hours and starts with the reception in the covered areas of the estate and continues with the visit to the Tower, inside and outside.
Then there is a tour of the organic vineyard, the stables with the horses, the gardens and the Winery. In the organized guided tours in Tower, the visitors have the opportunity to taste the wines of the estate accompanied by pies and cheeses and to be introduced to all the secrets of the wine.

"Antonis Tritsis" Environmental Awareness Park

In the municipality of Ilios is the Park "Antonis Tritsis" which borders the municipality of Agioi Anargyroi - Kamatero and is an important attraction for all residents of Athens. The Hellenic Ornithological Society is active in the Park with various educational programs in schools of Attica.

The "Antonis Tritsis" Environmental Awareness Park today is one of the last wildlife refuges in the urban environment of Athens. The environmental treasure of the Park includes six artificial lakes, which are surrounded by reeds and agricultural crops. The cultivation of fruit trees is done by biological method.
The diversity in the vegetation is also important for the presence of the birds. The ecosystem is home to 177 species of birds, many of which are rare in the urban environment, as well as amphibians, reptiles, bats, micro-mammals and hedgehogs. The rows of trees consist of cypresses, clusters of eucalyptus, acacia and acacia, as well as gardens of many plant species.
