A few words about Elliniko, Athens
Elliniko is situated near the Saronic Gulf coast, 10 km south of Athens city centre.
The area now called Elliniko began to be inhabited in 1925 after the Asia Minor catastrophe by Pontian refugees from the Sourmena of Pontus. Before that it was mentioned as an uninhabited area, barren and arid with a rural character, which until 1830 was a pasture owned by the Turkish Pasha Hasan. Some tried to build houses with plinths that quickly collapsed from the rainwater. In 1925 the Ministry of Agriculture gave lots of exchangeable land of 5 acres with the only condition for the installation to be the statement that the resident undertook to rock his plot, fencing and garden. Thus the area was inhabited by merchants, ship-owners, wealthy and literate people who came from Smyrna, Pontus, and Constantinople.
The former airport is in the western part of the municipal unit, near the coast. Most of the residential area is in the eastern part, east of the former airport. The northern part of the airport has been converted to a sports complex. There are plans to convert the remaining part into a park.
Elliniko International Airport was the international airport of Athens for over 60 years, until March 2001, when it closed. In recent years, a renovation plan of the Old Airport area has been under consultation with the aim of utilizing its areas. More specifically, the proposal to carry out the Hellinikon project, an investment of 7 billion euros, which will include tourist facilities, casinos, skyscrapers and more greenery, is considered to be able to utilize the space of the former airport while bringing a local economic development without previous but also aesthetic upgrade in the wider coastal area.
Elliniko is well connected to the centre of Athens through a new line of the Athens metro (Elliniko station). The Athens Tram serves the coastal part of Elliniko.
